FreshDex is built by WW IDEA, a nonprofit company based in Missoula, Montana. We specialize in creating Web-based database-driven applications using Ruby On Rails.
Although we most often develop software for educational uses, Institutes for Journalism & Natural Resources (IJNR), a local nonprofit organization, came to us desperately needing a product to help them manage their data. Like many nonprofits, they had reviewed the currently available services out there and found nothing that could support all of their basic needs in one package.
With our staff experienced in working with a variety of nonprofits, we knew that their dilemma was not unique. Nonprofit organizations have enough challenges without the added frustrations of database programs that are hard to use, don't allow remote access by staff members "on the road", or can only manage donors.
Working closely with IJNR, we developed a system that manages members, donors, and other individuals and groups that are vital to the organization. The ability to store the most current contact information, track group relationships and participation activities, streamline donation management, export data to spreadsheets, create key printables, and get on-demand Web access are crucial components.
IJNR also cultivates a group of members among which the organization wants to encourage extensive and self-sustaining networking opportunities. So, FreshDex also includes what we call a Community Portal. This portal allows members — in IJNR's case, journalists — to log in, update their contact information and share key activities, relevant work, or personal news with other members. Of course, we thought, this is yet another great feature for other nonprofits!
Plus, we realize that while most nonprofits share certain similarities, they vary in some ways. That's why we built in some flexibility. For example, every nonprofit can completely customize how they group their members and what they name them.
